Independent exchange is advancing the Australian grain industry

18,000+ growers, 350+ buyers, 20 Million+ tonnes traded, $7 Billion+ securely settled.

In the past decade, Clear Grain Exchange (CGX) has grown to become a mainstay in the Australian grain industry.

As the only independent exchange for physical grain in Australia, CGX has seen remarkable approval from the industry, with more than 4.8 million tonnes of grain settled through the exchange in season 2022/23 alone.

A focus on streamlining the traditional, and often cumbersome, grain selling process into an efficient and easily accessible online exchange has simplified the process for all parties involved and seen grain regularly trade at higher prices.

Underpinning the CGX business are 3 key pillars.

An independent exchange - CGX is not a buyer, seller or adviser of grain. It is not CGX’s role to have a view on price. This ensures the exchange operates without any potential bias, fostering a fair market where as many buyers as possible can participate in trying to buy Australian grain.

Secure settlement - CGX settles grain contracts. This is a unique offering in the Australian grain industry that ensures sellers retain title of grain and buyers retain title of funds until the contract is settled. It also ensures industry levies and royalties are disbursed and payment records are accessible online.

Accessibility - A focus on supporting users, facilitating industry good functions, and continual investment in CGX technology, has reduced barriers into the Australian market, enabling growers to reach all buyers and benefit from transparency of grain transactions.

CGX's managing director, Nathan Cattle, emphasises the exchange's role in fostering a transparent grain market where counter-party risks are minimised, and a wider array of buyers are encouraged to participate.

“Growers can have a direct impact on the efficiency of the Australian grain market. The simple act of offering grain for sale at a price they want, on an independent exchange, creates so much value for growers and broader industry.”

“All buyers can see the grain offered for sale and be encouraged to try and buy it", Nathan explains.

The evidence is Clear with grain regularly selling at better prices than growers may have thought was available.

The most recent innovation for CGX is the integration of igrain into the CGX ecosystem which extends the exchange’s approach to grain stored on-farm, further simplifying the supply chain and enhancing accessibility for all market participants.

The approach of accessibility, independence and secure settlements will enable Clear Grain Exchange to continue its mission of supporting the Australian Grain Industry into the future.
