Poetry corner - Francine

A Poem by Edwina Smith

She’s a social sort of girl,

keeps closely to her mates,

loves to lead the way

and first through the gates.

Work begins at 4 a.m.

while mist shrouds the hills.

Her milking team do attend,

despite the winter chills.

Francine, the Dairy Queen,

strolls in and looks around.

There’s her space, a comfy place,

where kindly friends are found.

The farmer keeps a sharp eye;

he’s weary from the plough,

but gladly gives a gentle pat,

to his favourite cow.

Her eyes are big and brown,

she gives a splendid yield;

so sweet, calm and quiet,

in parlour or the field.

Milking’s done, here’s the Sun;

she’ll graze throughout the day.

When afternoon shadows come,

the team is underway.

Twice a day, come what may,

but Francine makes no fuss.

Could she ever understand

what she does for us?

Alarm rings, it’s breakfast time!

Ready for work or school?

Yummy yogurt, milk on oats,

makes for tasty fuel.

It’s our most important meal,

the one we need the most.

We start our day a perfect way

with hot buttered toast!

Four friends meet the heat.

Why did they take a walk?

Sweat drips from furrowed brows,

Their mouths too parched for talk.

This summer stroll is thirsty work;

they wished they’d brought a fan.

Here’s hydration on a stick,

a timely ice cream van!

Around a table tempers fly,

they think they’ll all go mad!

Shares are down, costs are high;

results are looking bad.

Just in time, they seal a deal

amid the stress and chatter.

When the wine and cheese come out,

a downturn doesn’t matter!

When things get tough,

you’ve had enough

and just want to scream.

No need to shout,

The tea set’s out,

with scones, jam and cream!

Oh Francine, you help us so,

with dairy bovine features.

After lunch we shall enjoy,

custard tarts and peaches.

And of course, let’s not forget,

while busy on our phones;

calcium in these delights,

for healthy teeth and bones.

Dear Francine, a noble beast,

of meek and humble station.

We thank you now, for all you do,

for our grateful nation!
